In 1978, Harvey Milk gave his famous “Hope Speech.” The speech referred to Anita Bryant and John Briggs' national campaign against gay rights. Milk claimed that his election was a testament of hope. He addressed teens that were considering suicide and afraid to come out, giving them two options: “Go to California, or stay... and fight.”
Harvey Milk changed how homosexuals were viewed. At the time, homosexuals were thought down upon. In one interview, Jim Elliot, an auto mechanic, stated that Milk changed his views to thinking of gays as normal people. Milk got many to support gays and their rights.
