Process Paper
While selecting our topic for NHD, we wanted to look into a controversial subject in human rights. We looked through many NHD topic suggestions and came across Proposition 6. After more research on the topic, we discovered that Harvey Milk's while life was dedicated to opposing discrimination. We believed this would be a good topic because Harvey Milk was responsible for giving homosexuals some rights in the state of California. We believed this would be a strong project topic with many resources and information available. We also found much interest in the topic of gay rights.
We conducted our research by finding sources on the internet and looking in our local library database for books and documentaries. We were able to find many secondary sources from the internet, as well some primary sources from the book and documentary. We made an outline for our own use to know what to research. We also set up an interview with a statewide organization to elaborate on Milk's impact through the years in the LGBT community.
When selecting our presentation category, we first wanted to make an exhibit. We soon realized that 500 words were not enough to explain Harvey Milk’s full story, and was limiting to our creative processes. We then wanted to make a documentary, but came to the conclusion that neither of us are technically competent or capable of editing videos. Finally, we decided to create a website to fully explore Harvey Milk’s impact in history. We believed that 1,200 words would be just enough to explain Milk’s responsibility of giving rights to the LGBT community in California, and that a website was a creative outlet.
Our project relates to the theme of “Rights and Responsibilities” because Harvey Milk was responsible for giving some rights to homosexuals and hope to the LGBT community of California and the nation. We believe Harvey Milk was a true inspiration for homosexuals across the nation, showing them that your sexual orientation does not limit your success in life. Milk was also responsible for defeating Proposition 6, also known as the Briggs Initiative, which would have given the employers of educators the ability to fire LGBT teachers and the supporters of LGBT people. Milk’s impact on society caused many closeted homosexuals to come out to their peers and family.
